So lets face it, all hair extensions shed from time to time, similar to your real hair! But, there are several initiatives you can take to prevent excessive shedding and make your extensions look fuller and last longer.
Step 1: By all means, try to stay away from "hand-tied" weft extensions. These type of extensions are very delicate and shed more often than machine wefted extensions. I highly recommend machine weft extensions.
Step 2: Use a paddle hair brush or wide tooth comb when brushing/combing your extensions. Smaller toothed combs have the tendancy to snag the hair, and tug the hair away from the weft.
Step 3: Seal wefts before you install the hair. Many online hair companies offer hair extension sealant, follow the instructions given by the manufacturer on how to seal the wefts.
Step 4: Protect your hair at night or before going to bed; use a head scarf or a hair bonet. Doing this will prevent snagging and friction between your hair and other objects such as your pillow. This is important for those who wear hair extensions that are longer than 16 inches in length.
Step 5: Take special care when washing your hair extensions. Never rub, or ball up the hair when washing it with shampoo. Instead, use your fingers to gently comb through the hair in a downward motion. Try to keep the hair seperated using your fingers, and never rub or mat the hair. Improper handling of the hair while washing will lead to severe shedding. Dont forget to follow up with conditioner!
Step 6: Excessive usage of hot tools such as curling irons and flat irons can ruin the health of the hair and may cause the hair to become brittle and break. Be sure to use a heat protectant before styling with hot tools.
Step 7: Be gentle with your hair extensions! Try not to tug or pull on them, remember that the only thing keeping the hair on the weft is a peice of thread! Baby and pamper your hair extensions, and in return you'll notice less shedding, fuller looking hair, and longevity thus, a beautiful coiffure!
